Di was, until 2008, Senior Director within the government’s Primary National Strategy, responsible for its work on intervention for children at risk of under-achievement. Di has been a long serving primary teacher and was for twelve years headteacher of a large urban primary school. She has also worked as a local authority senior manager, and a member of the small government team that developed and implemented the National Literacy Strategy. In the latter role Di led on the development of widely-used publications and resources designed to help teachers provide targeted support for underachieving children and also worked very closely with over thirty Local Authorities.

Di’s recent work, as a member of the Senior Management team of the Primary National Strategy, has focused on the links between additional support for children with a range of learning needs and the teaching they receive in class, and on meeting the needs of children from minority ethnic groups and those learning English as an Additional Language. She is a national expert in these areas, responsible for key government publications and guidance. Other key areas of expertise are the leadership and management of intervention in schools, and effective and aligned local authority practices to tackle underachievement.
